In May 2025, we were proud to exhibit at Future Icons Selects, part of London Craft Week, a showcase that celebrates contemporary makers who push the boundaries of design and craft. For this exhibition, we created Edition ‘0015’, a one-of-a-kind Modern Marquetry artwork that represents both the scale of our ambition and the depth of our values as a purpose-driven business.
Inspiration Behind the Piece
From the beginning, our aim was to create a work that felt bold, experimental, and unapologetically modern. We wanted Edition ‘0015’ to stand as a statement piece—something that not only demonstrated the intricacy and possibilities of marquetry but also made visible the hidden beauty of discarded materials.
Materials with a Story
Every element of this artwork carries with it a story of transformation. The piece was created entirely from reclaimed and recycled sources, including:
Milk bottle tops – once everyday waste, now layered into striking patterns.
Lino offcuts – remnants of flooring projects that might otherwise have gone to landfill.
Skateboard ramps – a nod to movement, energy, and urban culture.
Reclaimed window frames – timber with its own history of framing people’s lives and homes.
These diverse materials, gathered from local businesses and community donations, reflect our mission to rescue the overlooked and reimagine it into contemporary design.

The Making Process
At 1057 × 745 × 25 mm, Edition ‘0015’ is the largest artwork we’ve created to date. Working at this scale was both a technical and creative challenge. We carefully processed each material, preparing it for precise cutting and composition. The final surface was finished with oil and wax, bringing out natural tones and subtle textures that shift with light and perspective.
Creating such a large-scale piece required patience, precision, and tea. At times, the irregularity of reclaimed materials tested our craftsmanship, but those imperfections became part of the character and story of the work.

Exhibition & Reception
Future Icons Selects provided the perfect stage for Edition ‘0015.’ Surrounded by the work of other innovative makers, our piece sparked conversations about the role of sustainability in contemporary craft and design. Visitors were drawn not only to the bold design but also to the narrative of transformation behind it.
Many were surprised to learn that what they saw—sleek, modern marquetry—had once been destined for waste. That sense of revelation opened up meaningful discussions about circular design, craftsmanship, and how creativity can change the way we value materials.
What It Means to Us
Edition ‘0015’ is more than an artwork; it is a milestone in our journey as Stratum Marquetry. It embodies our belief that reclaimed materials can be elevated into luxury design and that sustainability can sit hand-in-hand with beauty and innovation.
For us, this piece also signals what lies ahead: pushing scale, experimenting with materials, and continuing to challenge perceptions of modern marquetry.
